What’s Your Inspo?
Flowers. My inspiration is flowers. In all their joyful, dramatic, FUN, sexy wonder.
Whenever I’m feeling a little stuck, whenever the doldrums threaten to invade, whenever I need a dash of something… a little pizzazz, I always turn to flowers.
In the spring and summer here in the Blue Ridge mountains, wild flowers abound - rich red poppies, sunny black-eyed Susans, deep purple foxgloves - all dot the landscape and remind me that we are all blooms waiting to burst into living out loud! How amazing to BE a wild orange poppy blowing in the breeze soaking in the sunshine playing with the bees. Makes me smile just thinking about it!
Clearly, flowers play a major role at Hark & Bloom - as a metaphor for grounding yourself, nurturing your soil, growing into the light and letting your creativity be on display for all to marvel in your creative brilliance. I’m forever grateful for flowers and their beauty, mystery, and inspiring spirit.
Here’s a wonderful poem for you:
‘Poppies’
Mary Oliver
The poppies send up their
orange flares; swaying
in the wind, their congregations
are a levitation
of bright dust, of thin
and lacy leaves.
There isn’t a place
in this world that doesn’t
sooner or later drown
in the indigos of darkness,
but now, for a while,
the roughage
shines like a miracle
as it floats above everything
with its yellow hair.
Of course nothing stops the cold,
black, curved blade
from hooking forward—
of course
loss is the great lesson.
But I also say this: that light
is an invitation
to happiness,
and that happiness,
when it’s done right,
is a kind of holiness,
palpable and redemptive.
Inside the bright fields,
touched by their rough and spongy gold,
I am washed and washed
in the river
of earthly delight—
and what are you going to do—
what can you do
about it—
deep, blue night?
And some questions to ponder:
When was the last time you slowed down to observe? To really notice… what brings your soul happiness? What inspires you to create? Do you take heed and honor the invitation? Is there a better time than now? ;)
